Nothing is quite as embarrassing for a
writer trying to be elusive as having to
explain what he means to an actor,
and that is exactly what happened to
me when Mandy Patinkin, who played
George, asked me to explain the quatrain
beginning with "Pretty isn't beautiful...."
I knew what I meant, but I hoped
I would never have to articulate it.
I was able to explain it to him enough,
however, without reducing its vague mystery,
so that he was able to sing it with passionate conviction.
It's still a favorite lyric of mine,
and I think I know what it means.
